Subir Raha awarded Petrotech Lifetime Achievement Award

Jadavpur University alumnus and one of India's most respected corporate leaders, late Shri Subir Raha was awarded the Petrotech Society's Lifetime Achievement Award 2012 at a glittering ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on October 15, 2012. The posthumous award was received by Shri Raha's wife, Smt Mita Raha, from Shri Pranab Mukherjee, the Hon'ble President of India.

The award includes the exclusive Petrotech silver oil drop memento, a silver citation, and a purse of Rupees five lakhs.

Shri Raha's prolific career began in the Indian oil and gas industry, which he joined as a management trainee for IOC in 1970 after his graduation from Jadavpur University (JU). His meteoric rise to become Director (HR) of IOC, in concurrent charge of Business Development, Information Technology and Corporate Communications in 1998, was followed by an outstanding tenure as the youngestChairman & Managing Director of ONGC from 2001 06. Between 1996 & 98, Shri Raha headed Government of India's Oil Coordination Committee.

Born on August 28, 1948, Shri Raha excelled in academics, earning University merit rankings in Matriculation and Pre-University examinations with national scholarships and prizes. He graduated in Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering, specialising in Industrial Electronics, from JU in 1969, with several awards including the medal for Best All-rounder Graduate. He did his MBA withDistinction at the University of Leeds in 1985, specialising in Strategic Marketing, and was an alumnus of the Administrative Staff College, Henley (1995).

Shri Raha was the Boy Scout Troop Leader in school, Senior Under-Officer in National Cadet Corps at JU, and served with field rank till Major in the Territorial Army, winning the Commandant's gold medal in post-commission training. At JU, he was actively engaged in the Mountaineering & Trekking Club, Film Society, Debating Society, Photographic Club and the Students Union; he was theeditor of the University magazine, Jadavpur Viswavidyalaya Patrika. He was keenly interested in the alumni activities of his alma mater.

Shri Raha lost a valiant battle with lung cancer on February 1, 2010. He was 62. In his memory, the Subir Raha Memorial Scholarship was instituted at JU in 2011, with an annual disbursement of Rupees twenty thousand, co-sponsored by his family via the company he founded, Team Raha Ideation Private Limited, and Areva T&D Limited, where he served as Advisor post-retirement. Subrata Sarkar, admitted to JU in 2011 in First Year Computer Science, is the first recipient of the Scholarship; his continuing academic excellence has earned him the Scholarship for 2012 and 2013 as well.
