ONGC unveils its First Green Building at Dehradun

It was a dream of the erstwhile CMD Late Mr Subir Raha to have ONGC create Green Buildings at some of its prime work centres.

On the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya on May 13, 2013 the first Green Building of ONGC was inaugurated at Dehradun by CMD Mr Sudhir Vasudeva. The building which is set to become an iconic building of Uttarakhand has been named ‘Green Hills’ as it aptly reflects the verdant green hills of the surrounding Shivalik range.

Addressing the large gathering of ONGCians present for the inaugural function, Mr Vasudeva said, “With the formal inauguration of its first Green Building on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, ONGC hopes that this will usher in an era of undiminishing energy finds. Also the coffers of not only the organization but of the country will be filled always.” He complimented all members of the team comprising ONGCians, architects, contractors and construction agency for having executed the project despite various hurdles.

Director (HR) Mr K.S Jamestin congratulated all those whose efforts made ONGC’s dream come true. He expressed special gratitude to all the workers and laborers whose toil often goes unrecognized but who are a vital part of such a project.

Dr. A K Balyan, MD & CEO Petronet LNG and former Director (HR) ONGC was also present for this function. During his tenure in ONGC he was a part of the team that conceptualized the Green Buildings of ONGC. Mr NK Verma, Director (Exploration), ONGC also graced the occasion with his presence.

It was a dream of the erstwhile CMD of ONGC Late Mr Subir Raha that ONGC should take the initiative to create Green Buildings as its offices at some of its prime work centres. Turning his dream into reality, five Green Buildings are coming up in ONGC at Dehradun, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

‘Green Hills’ at Dehradun is the first green building to have been completed.

Some of the main features of Green Hills, ONGC Dehradun are:

• With a total built up area of 14600 sqm, the five storey icon can seat 620 persons.
• Registered with UNFCCC under Clean Development Mechanism it will generate 735 CERs every year.
• Landscaped Green Roof and abundant bamboo plantation in the atrium of the building.
• Conserving water upto 30% through use of onsite sewage plant and low flow sanitary fittings; rainwater harvesting.
• Up to 43% energy saving by use of energy efficient motors, High COP Chillers for HVAC and under-floor air conditioning.
• Solar power generation will meet 7.5% of total electrical load.
• Solar panels over parking spaces to generate energy and reduce heat by reflecting the sunlight.
• Intelligent lighting through use of sensors for daylight control, LED and CFL lights and abundant natural light.

With the completion of the ‘Green Hills’ at Dehradun, the company has kept its promise to its stakeholders to reduce its carbon footprints thereby reiterating its commitment towards addressing global environmental concerns.
